Awesome ‘70s Weekend, 28 & 29 June 2014

With work on-going on a new platform for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Whitby station, a host of additional platforms are set to appear at Levisham Station on 28 & 29 June - but this time, platform shoes, when the clock is turned back to the days of bell-bottom flares and glam rock for the Awesome '70s weekend!

Hot on the heels of the gogo boots that graced the railway for the ‘60s weekend, the clock has moved on ten years for a weekend of sideburns, extra-large collars and plaid trousers to celebrate the decade that style forgot.  Different aspects of the era will be recreated at different stations along the line, with glam rockers taking over the platform at Levisham with performances from The Glamned, and supporting act Monty's Boogie Nights, on Saturday and Sunday from 12.30pm until 4.00pm, with passengers invited to enjoy a pint at the real ale bar.  Meanwhile, at Goathland station, visitors can enjoy Saturday afternoon fever (and Sunday, too) with the hottest disco in town playing dance classics from 12.30pm to 4.00pm.

"The 1970s was a very important time for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, when it re-opened following its closure in the 1960s as a heritage railway, so no doubt there will have been a plethora of platform shoes, tight trousers and shaggy haircuts amongst our first leisure travellers, and this weekend, we're hoping that many of our travellers will embrace their inner 'star man' and come dressed for the occasion in their finest retro gear," comments marketing manager, Danielle Ramsey.  "The activities along the line are free for everyone with a valid NYMR ticket, with platform tickets available for anyone just popping in on foot or by car to join the groovy party!"

Indeed, several ‘70s enthusiasts will be making themselves at home in the car park at Goathland, when they park up their classic cars from the era - expect to see a host of cars that would be at home in the TV series Life on Mars, from classic Escorts to the ultimate icon of ‘70s style, the Ford Cortina!

Tickets cost from £10.00 for adults for a Pickering-Levisham return ticket, or from £20.50 for a Pickering - Goathland/Grosmont Day Rover.   Tickets are also available to ride the line the whole way from Pickering to Whitby, or for travellers starting at the coast, from Whitby to Levisham.
