With many people eagerly awaiting the release next year of the new Dad’s Army movie, filmed around Yorkshire earlier this year, visitors to Pickering between the 16 & 18 October will be excused for believing they have walked onto the film set, as the North Yorkshire Moors Railway hosts the annual Railway in Wartime Weekend.

“When Winston Churchill said, ‘Never was so much owed by so many to so few’ he could well have been talking about our Railway in Wartime weekend, which is organised by a fantastic team of volunteers and NYMR staff for the thousands of people who descend on Pickering, Grosmont and our occupied French village of Le Visham,” comments Chris Price, who recently took over the position of managing director of the heritage railway.  “We’ve got a packed programme, including the Saturday and Sunday morning parades from 10.45am with a host of historic and military vehicles, so this promises to be another superb weekend of re-enactment and commemoration.”

Visitors to the event are invited to attend in 1940s dress, whether civilian or wearing the uniform of Allied forces.  Even without using the Channel Tunnel, railway passengers can experience the entente cordiale at Levisham, which will be transformed into the occupied French town of Le Visham for the duration of the weekend.

“The Railway in Wartime weekend is without a doubt one of the busiest weekends of the year for us, so we strongly recommend that people buy tickets for travelling on the train before they come to avoid disappointment,” adds Chris Price.  Day Rover tickets between Pickering and Whitby are available for £30 for adults, £26 for concessions or £15 for children, with a family ticket for £64 (two adults and up to four children).  Discounted tickets covering two or three days are also available.
