Santa Specials on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

He’s a man to travels the globe in just one night, so it is little wonder that St Nicholas has chosen to put his grotto aboard a train, when the North Yorkshire Moors Railway welcomes the return of Father Christmas for its Santa Specials, running every weekend from 30 November to 22 December 2013.

“For many parents, the novelty of queuing for hours to see Father Christmas in a shopping centre or department store soon wears off when you realise there’s an hour or more to wait before your child gets to see the jolly man himself,” comments Danielle Ramsey, marketing manager for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.  “Our Santa Specials do away with the dull wait – all the children on the train get to meet Santa during the return journey, and can sit in comfort and warmth, filling in trail sheets or watching the beautiful scenery as they travel.”

Indeed, included in the ticket is a hot or cold drink – with cream liqueur available for accompanying adults who fancy a seasonal tipple – and mince pie, and children all receive a present from Santa when they are taken through the vintage carriages to his grotto on rails.  At Pickering and Grosmont stations, refreshments can be collected from signposted locations on Platform 2, whilst refreshments will be served on board the Whitby trains.

Passengers on the Santa Specials can choose which route they take along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway; there are departures every weekend from Pickering, which provides a return journey beyond Levisham, with services on Sunday 1 and 8 December from Whitby (travelling either up the Esk Valley, or to Grosmont, depending on other local timetables), and most weekends from Grosmont, which takes in the track beyond Goathland.

Tickets for the Santa Specials are £14.50 per person, and must be booked in advance either online at www.nymr.co.uk, or by calling 01751 472508 Ext 242/244/252.  Please note that the Santa Specials are always exceptionally popular, so visitors are advised to book early to guarantee their place.

Upon returning to their starting destination, visitors are then invited to look around the NYMR gift shops for inspiration for unusual – and often steam-engine themed! – gifts for friends and family.
