NCU’s PhD degree in Marriage and Family Therapy becomes the first and only online doctoral program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, (May 5, 2015) – Northcentral University (NCU), a global online graduate-focused university, today announced that its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy (PhD MFT) has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). NCU’s PhD MFT is the first and currently only distance-based doctoral program to receive COAMFTE’s coveted programmatic accreditation, ensuring that the University’s program aligns with national accreditation standards.

The PhD MFT degree program provides NCU students with a high-quality, rigorous education and training experience for becoming professional marriage and family therapists. Through a combination of online and face-to-face interaction, students participate in advanced clinical education and training, research coursework and opportunities, and supervision training and experience.

“The COAMFTE accreditation for our PhD MFT degree program is a demonstration of the dedication and commitment of the University, with our 100 percent doctoral faculty, to provide the best possible educational experience to NCU students,” stated Dr. James Billings, NCU dean of the School of Marriage and Family Sciences. “Our school’s students, alumni and faculty are part of a nationwide community of therapists who work together to enrich the lives of others.”

More than half of the state licensure boards in the U.S. accept COAMFTE curriculum as substantial coursework to meet the requirement for licensure. Of the COAMFTE program graduates polled, 96 percent passed the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Board (AMFTRB) national exam or equivalent state exam. Many employers, including government agencies, require applicants to have a degree from a COAMFTE-accredited program.
