At the MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries ceremony in Copenhagen on Monday, Kvitnes Gård in Vesterålen was awarded one Michelin star. The recognition marks a historic first for Northern Norway and highlights a broader shift taking place across the Arctic region, where chefs, producers and local communities are redefining what fine dining looks like in the far north.

– We would like to warmly congratulate Halvar Ellingsen and the entire team at Kvitnes Gård on this remarkable achievement. Earning a Michelin star is one of the highest recognitions in global gastronomy and is first and foremost a testament to their talent, vision and commitment. We are incredibly proud to see a restaurant from Northern Norway receive this distinction, says Trond Øverås, CEO of Arctic Norway Tourist Board.

More Than a Single Star
While the award recognises the accomplishments of one restaurant, it also reflects a broader development taking place across Northern Norway's food scene.

For years, the region has been known internationally for its dramatic landscapes, northern lights and outdoor experiences. Increasingly, however, visitors are discovering Northern Norway through its food culture. Arctic ingredients, extreme seasonal variations, cold-water seafood, traditional preservation techniques and a new generation of chefs are helping define a culinary identity unlike anywhere else in Europe.

– This recognition also shines a light on the producers, ingredients and food traditions that define Northern Norway. The success of Kvitnes Gård demonstrates what is possible when local knowledge, local ingredients and culinary excellence come together, says Øverås.

Growing International Recognition for Arctic Gastronomy
The Michelin award comes during a period of growing international recognition for Northern Norway's food culture.

Earlier this year, Nordland was named European Region of Gastronomy 2028, recognising the county's commitment to sustainable food production, local sourcing and culinary innovation. Together with Kvitnes Gård's Michelin star, the designation reflects the growing international recognition of Northern Norway as a destination for distinctive food experiences.

As global travellers increasingly seek authentic and place-based food experiences, Northern Norway offers something few destinations can replicate: a cuisine shaped by geography, climate and culture.
