Northland Announces Tapuli Drill Results
Vancouver, June 15, 2007: Buck Morrow, President of Northland Resources Inc., is pleased to announce the results from Northland's recent 33-hole drill program and initial results of the metallurgical testing at the Tapuli magnetite deposit in "Kaunisvaara iron ore field" Norrbotten County, Sweden. The Tapuli prospect is located 5km to the north of the Stora Sahavaara magnetite deposit. The results to date support Northland management's current view that the Tapuli body is a potential source of low sulphur iron ore, accessible by open pit mining operations with a relatively low stripping ratio.
Highlights of the recent drilling include:
TPL07002 91.5m @ 36% Fe within a broader intercept of 210.3m @ 27.8% Fe
TPL07003 47m @ 41.1% Fe within a broader intercept of 238.1m @ 29.1% Fe
TPL07005 38.6m @ 41.4% Fe within a broader intercept of 77.8m @ 33.4 % Fe
TPL07006 38m at 36% Fe within a broader intercept of 91.7m @ 25% Fe
The true thickness of the mineralization is believed to be approximately 85-90% of the downhole thickness. A full table of results is given below and a map showing the drill collar locations has been posted on the Northland website at www.northlandresourcesinc.com Historical results for holes drilled by the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU) in the 1960s will be available on the website soon. Northland has twinned some of SGU holes and comparison of the twinned holes suggests that there is good correlation between the two generations of drilling.
Buck Murrow states "What has impressed us most is the low sulfur content (<0.1%) for much of the deposit. From our initial metallurgical work, we believe Tapuli has the potential to produce a first-class commercial grade sinter feed using a relatively coarse grind".
Drilling has confirmed the presence of a thick higher grade core zone to Tapuli known as the Central Zone. It measures roughly 400m by 400m in extent and exceeds 200m in true thickness locally. The Central zone will be the main focus of Northland's work at Tapuli going forward. It occurs below an 11-meter layer of glacial till, along the hinge zone of a major fold axis which was estimated by the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU) to contain 17-million tonnes averaging +40% Fe to a depth of 300m within a larger resource estimated at approximately 60,000,000 tonnes of magnetite mineralization.
Geophysical work (magnetic and gravity) completed by the SGU in 1971 concluded that the central core of high grade may be continuous to a depth in excess of 2,000m. Management believes that Tapuli could be mined concurrently with the nearby Stora Sahavaara magnetite body, potentially extending the open pit mining phase of Northland's iron projects by an additional 5 years. The reader is cautioned that Northland has not completed a feasibility study on either the Tapuli or Stora Sahavaara magnetite bodies and there is no certainty that the projects will be economically viable. Also, the historic resources referred to are not NI 43-101 compliant. The Company does not have - and is not aware of - any more recent resource estimates which conform to the standards laid out in NI 43-101 and the historical estimate should not be relied upon.
Northland's drilling, together with the historical work, has outlined the deposit to depths ranging from 100m to 300m below surface with bands of contiguous magnetite mineralization ranging from 10m to 200m in width. The mineralization can be traced for 2,200m along a northeast-southwest strike direction, dipping to the northwest at 50-65 degrees.
Metallurgical Testing
In conjunction with the drilling, the Company initiated a major metallurgical test program including Davis Tube Tests (DTT) and x-ray mineralogical analysis. To date, results have been received from 128 of the 300 planned DTT's as well as assays of the resultant magnetic and non-magnetic material fractions. The DDT and assay results indicate that a high grade, low sulfur iron concentrate may be achievable through magnetic separation only. A full evaluation of the current results is underway and mineralogical analysis of selected DTT's will be undertaken over the next several months. Additional results will be released as available. The results will also be used for planning future bench and pilot scale test work. The DTT and assay work are being carried out by the Finnish Geological Survey metallurgical laboratory in Outokumpu, Finland.
Stora Sahavaara
The 200 tonne bulk sample of Stora Sahavaara magnetite ore was containerized and has been received at the metallurgical testing laboratory in Ontario, Canada. Pilot plant test work started on June 11, 2007 and results will be reported as they are received and interpreted.
