Less than 1,000 places left in British Gas Great London Swim

There are only two months to go until the British Gas Great London Swim and entries are filling fast with only 1,000 places left. Organisers are predicting that places will be completely full by early June. The British Gas Great London Swim takes place in the Royal Victoria Dock on Saturday 3 July 2010 and gives entrants the opportunity to experience the challenge of swimming a mile in open-water. Last year, the event captured the imagination of personalities including Capital Radio DJ Roberto and Alastair Petrie from the popular TV drama Cranford. There was also an impressive line up in the elite races including current World Champion Keri Anne Payne, Olympic Bronze 10km open-water medallist Cassie Patten, triple Olympic gold medallist Stephanie Rice from Australia, Olympic silver 10km open-water medallist Dave Davies and Olympic bronze medallist Tomas Lurz from Germany. In its second year the event has received a record number of entries with 5,000 swimmers expected to take the plunge on the day-making it the biggest outdoor swim in the South of England. Colin Hill, Head of Great Swim said: “It is fantastic to see so many people wanting to take part in the Great London Swim. A few years ago the idea of taking part in a marathon or triathlon was a totally new concept but look how popular they have become. The record number of entries for the British Gas Great Swim Series shows that swimming is the next big thing.” The event is open to swimmers of all shapes and sizes from novices to Olympic heroes of open-water. Some take part for the challenge; some use it as a motivation to get fit and others to raise money for charity. It is part of the British Gas Great Swim series of one-mile events which are taking place across the UK this summer. The flagship event is the British Gas Great North Swim in Windermere, which attracts nearly 10,000 swimmers over two days.
