News release Wednesday 9 June 2010 The world’s top swimmers join 3,000 brave participants at this year’s British Gas Great East Swim Entries are now closed for this year’s British Gas Great East Swim following a record number of registrations. In just over a week’s time, 3,000 brave swimmers will attempt to swim a one mile course in Alton Water reservoir. Some will be taking part for the challenge, some to get fit and many to raise money for charity. The event has doubled in size since it was first staged in 2009, proving that outdoor swimming is the next great challenge to sweep the nation. The masses will be joined by some of the world’s top swimmers who will compete in the elite races at midday on Saturday 19 June. The elite men’s race is already shaping up to be a great event with an impressive line up that includes defending champion Tom Allen (GBR), three times Olympic bronze 10km open-water medallist Peter Stoychev (BUL), World champion 25km Brendan Capell (AUS) and seven times Australian Ironman champion Ky Hurst (AUS). Already confirmed to take part in the elite women’s race is current World 10km open-water champion Keri-anne Payne (GBR), Olympic bronze 10km medallist Cassie Patten (GBR) and British Gas Great London Swim champion Katy Whitfield (GBR). Spectators are encouraged to come along on the day and cheer on the swimmers. There will also be a farmers market, big screen, Dance East performance, charity village, climbing wall, trampoline, and SCC library for all the family to enjoy. -End- For more information please contact Caroline Holmes, Great Swim on: E: caroline.holmes@nova-international.com or T: 07894 386 688 British Gas Great Swim 2010 event dates: British Gas Great East Swim - Saturday 19 June British Gas Great London Swim – Saturday 3 July British Gas Great Scottish Swim - Saturday 21 August British Gas Great North Swim - Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 September
