The 1903 home was built by one of the founding families of Plant City

PLANT CITY, FL (January 17, 2017) – The McDonald house, built in 1903, was just listed for $439,000. The home once belonged to one of the founding families of Plant City, whose ancestors settled in the Tampa Bay area after the Civil War. Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate’s James Adair of the company’s South Tampa office has the listing at 301 Old Hopewell Road.

The McDonald family patriarch, Robert McDonald Sr., was a veteran of the Civil War. After the war, McDonald Sr. moved his family from Alabama to a town just outside Plant City called Cartersville. The town was renamed Hopewell, a namesake of the church the family founded in Alabama. McDonald Sr. purchased 400 acres of land and the family began their homestead. The family founded Hopewell Baptist Church, the regional cemetery and funeral home, each which still exists today.

Bob McDonald Jr., the grandson of McDonald Sr., began construction on the McDonald home in 1902. The home remained in the McDonald family for two generations. Several other properties across Plant City can be traced back to the McDonald pioneers.

The house today has been carefully preserved with the Hillsborough County Historic Preservation Challenge Grant. The property maintains a historic designation, which requires that the home’s exterior remain in its original state. Many structural details are original to the home including the floors, walls, ceilings, exterior clapboard, most windows and at least one exterior door. Upgrades were made to the residence in the 1990s, including a kitchen remodel and the conversion of a porch to a bathroom.

Additional property details include:

• Four bedrooms, three bathrooms and 3,456 square-feet of living space

• 720 square-feet of porch space

• Five acres of property

• Formal dining room

• Wood-burning fireplace

• Historic smokehouse in the backyard
