River Fly-In Condominiums Break Ground, Provide Private Pilots with Community Developed Just for Them
MERRITT ISLAND, FL (October 24, 2016) – River Fly-In, a condominium designed with private pilots in mind, has just broken ground and reservations are now being accepted. After reserving their unit, future residents of the River Fly-In will be able to customize their condo to their own design preferences. Pilots will be able to reserve their own hangar at the Merritt Island Airport and will have 24-hour access to their private aircraft. The River Fly-In, expected to be completed within two years, will offer 112 units with prices starting at $269,900.
The development was an idea behind Brevard neurologist, Dr. Wasim Niazi, a private pilot himself who saw a need for a new type of fly-in community. Niazi comes from an entrepreneurial family and for the last 30 years, he and his family have been involved in building projects, franchise growth and the oil industry with incredible success. A close-knit family, Niazi is a part owner of the family’s ventures and also balances his own medical career, flying hobby and a development project of his own.
Outside of his work as a practicing neurologist with Brevard Neurology Associates, Niazi is a recreational pilot and has been active with the hobby for over 20 years.
“Florida has the highest number of flight days per year, so this was a great place for me to settle,” said Niazi.
When Niazi wanted to fly his plane, he used his fly-in community’s simple landing strip and left the aircraft outside his home. The concept of a fly-in community is not new, but they generally offer only the basics for pilots.
“There usually aren’t any amenities offered in fly-in communities,” said Niazi. “The community oftentimes will just have a landing strip, so pilots are left to their own devices for fuel, aircraft storage and aircraft maintenance, so it’s very challenging for busy pilots.”
Niazi saw a need for a simpler way to fly from home. He soon discovered a vacant plot of land adjacent to the Merritt Island Airport. He purchased the lot and began developing plans to build a condominium community that would offer residents quick access to their planes, within walking distance of their home. The pilots would have access to all of the airport’s amenities, solving the problems that Niazi encountered in other fly-in communities that offer only a landing strip.
Reservations are being accepted now for the EDI International-designed condominiums, and the project has already generated interest from local pilots.
For pilots and non-pilots alike, the condo community will offer a fitness center and boardwalk around the 13-acre nature preserve right in the backyard. A new veteran’s memorial park and museum will also be constructed next to the River Fly-In with a bridge connecting the condos to the memorial park. Cocoa Beach is a short five-mile drive and the Bahamas can be reached by private plane in one hour.
