Tips to Get Your Home Organized

You’ve been meaning to do it. Maybe it was even your New Year’s resolution…last year. Don’t put it off any longer – it’s time to get your home organized.

The first step is clearing out the clutter. Go through closets and cabinets, making piles of things to keep, donate or sell, and throw away. Recycle outdated magazines and catalogs that have been piling up. Review the documents and paperwork in your filing cabinet, and shred what’s no longer essential. Be ruthless in determining what you really have to keep. Consider having a yard sale – the thought of making a little extra money might be exactly the motivation you need.

Once all the excess has been eliminated, make a place for everything. When you know precisely where something goes, you’re more likely to put it away. Look at the areas in your house where stuff accumulates and find a way to contain it. Hang hooks by the entry for coats, keys and bags. Set out a tray to hold sunglasses, wallets and mail. Get some baskets to stash magazines, bath towels or toys. Store miscellaneous household items by type, then stash them together in bins.

Finally, leave space for more. Keep a few extra boxes and baskets on hand for the new piles that are sure to appear, and create a monthly reminder to sort through everything. A little bit of extra effort now means you won’t have to start all over from scratch next year.
