NYC & Company encourages visitors and New Yorkers to experience Lower East Side as part of Neighborhood x Neighborhood
—Lower East Side Ready to Welcome New Yorkers and Visitors in Anticipation of Lower East Side History Month in May—
New York City (April 8, 2014) — NYC & Company, New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organization, announced Lower East Side in Manhattan as the next destination to be featured in Neighborhood x Neighborhood. A lively neighborhood with immigrant and bohemian history, the Lower East Side is home to an established music and arts scene, popular bars and clubs, and inexpensive restaurants. In May the Lower East Side celebrates its history with public events, exhibitions and tours during the first Lower East Side History Month. This Manhattan neighborhood is accessible by F, J and M trains and a short walk from the B, D, N, Q, R and 6 trains. For “Must-See Lower East Side” highlights and more, visit nycgo.com/nxn.
“Exploring New York City’s hundreds of neighborhoods and discovering cultural institutions, restaurants, retailers and more is an exciting part of the City’s visitor experience,” said Fred Dixon, president and CEO of NYC & Company. “We encourage everyone to take the opportunity to spend a day exploring the vibrant Lower East Side and discovering where old meets new in New York City.”
Celebrated for serving as a backdrop to the Jewish American experience in New York City and characterized by blocks lined with tenement buildings that once housed German, Irish, Italian, Polish and Ukrainian immigrants in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Lower East Side has retained characteristics of its historical past that contribute to its charm today. This May the Lower East Side hosts the first Lower East Side History Month. More than 30 locations throughout the Lower East Side, Alphabet City, Chinatown, East Village and Little Italy will host public events, exhibitions, tours and more. A listing of events is available on leshistorymonth.org.

Neighborhood x Neighborhood: The Essential Guide to NYC
New York City is made up of five distinct boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. The Neighborhood x Neighborhood initiative spotlights the affordability and accessibility of these diverse communities, including areas that have seen new hotel development in recent years. Neighborhoods and featured highlights are chosen in collaboration with community leaders and with consideration of NYC & Company’s members.
In order to continue to grow New York City’s tourism industry, Neighborhood x Neighborhood targets repeat visitors, intrepid first-time visitors and New Yorkers seeking new adventures here in their home city. The campaign was designed to highlight the diversity of offerings in New York City’s five boroughs, encourage exploration in areas outside traditional tourist locations and generate economic activity in the featured neighborhoods.
Neighborhood x Neighborhood is produced by NYC & Company and its Presenting Sponsor, Santander Bank, N.A. The sponsorship includes production of taxi videos each month and bus stop shelters and street-pole banners highlighting the selected neighborhoods.
