Fiber optic end-cap capabilities with the SMARTSPLICER now available at Fiberguide Industries

NYFORS TEKNOLOGI AB (publ) is delighted to announce that the technology of CO2 laser splicing and glass shaping with the SMARTSPLICER will now be available at Fiberguide Industries. The SMARTSPLICER, developed by NYFORS TEKNOLOGI AB and Fraunhofer IOF (Jena, Germany), allows for contamination free splicing and glass processing with CO2 laser light for high power lasers, sensors and telecommunication fiber components.

Fiberguide Industries will now be able to produce the largest end capped fibers currently available, thanks to the unparalleled fiber splicing technology offered by the SMARTSPLICER. “By developing the SMARTSPLICER, NYFORS and Fraunhofer IOF have given us the capability to easily attach large end caps to a wide range of optical fiber. The new device will greatly facilitate Fiberguide’s production of high power laser delivery connectors and systems by allowing the fusion of very large pieces of glass to fibers. We now have the capability to fuse end caps of up to 25mm to fibers”, said Fiberguide’s vice president of technology, Dr. Devinder Saini.

Endcapped fibers are especially useful for high power applications that require minimal loses at interfaces. The SMARTSPLICER will allow for an end-cap to fiber ratio greater than 50:1 due to its precise heating with laser light. This makes it possible to produce components with extremely large end caps that have unprecedented durability even at high power levels.

The SMARTSPLICER will be further presented at Photonics West 2017, January 31st – February 2nd at the Moscone Center, San Francisco, CA.
