NYFORS introduces the SmartSplicer™ - an advanced laser splicing and glass shaping system

At the 2015 LASER world of PHOTONICS trade show in Munich, Germany, NYFORS introduces the SmartSplicer™ – an advanced glass processing and optical fiber splicing product platform for development and manufacturing of sensitive high power laser, sensor and telecommunication fiber components. The SmartSplicer™ utilizes annular CO2 laser heating for flexible and contamination free processing of fused fiber components.

The SmartSplicer™ has been developed in close cooperation between Nyfors Teknologi AB of Stockholm, Sweden, and the Fraunhofer IOF Institute in Jena, Germany, which has designed the optical system around patent pending and proprietary optical technology.

High precision optics with axicon refractive elements convert a laser beam into a ring of adjustable diameter, matching the fibers or components under processing. This optical configuration provides uniform and highly precise distribution of optical power through a completely contamination free heating process.

Different types of fibers and optical components can be processed through glass shaping operations such as fiber to fiber splicing, tapering and fiber to end cap splicing.

The SmartSplicer™ system features include:

  • Patent pending Axicon Splicing™ technology for uniform and highly precise annular laser power distribution
  • Intelligent tool holder system that allows the customer to customize the machine to their specific applications
  • Contamination free CO2 laser heat source
  • System can operate in horizontal or vertical orientation – Gravity Splicing™
  • No consumables like process gas, filaments or electrodes needed

The SmartSplicer™ will be further presented at the 2015 LASER world of PHOTONICS in Munich, Germany, June, 22–25. It will be available for custmers late 2015.

Development of the SmartSplicer™ has been carried out within a research project funded by the EUREKA Eurostars programme through national funding agencies DLR in Germany and VINNOVA in Sweden.
