Moving towards Next-Generation Tyre Technology

With just over 290 exhibitors and a major conference and workshop programme, Tire Technology Expo is a leading meeting place for the international tyre industry. Nynas will be there with a stand in the exhibition area. In addition, Dr Mika Lahtinen, Technical Manager, will be giving a presentation under the heading “Guaranteeing the future supply: Tyre tread compound oils with low aromatic content – and high solvency”.
Dr Lahtinen has extensive experience from the industry, and before coming to Nynas in early 2016 he was Head of Tyre Material Research & Development at Nokian Tyres. He is now one of the leading international names in the field of winter tyre development.
In his presentation, Dr Lahtinen will explain that aromatic oils have been gradually replaced in tyre compounding by safe oils in most countries and regions, a development that has been strongly supported by legislation in areas such as the European Union and Brazil. The next region to introduce tyre oil legislation is likely to be India or China, and in due course other countries in Asia as well.
The replacement of aromatic oils in non-tread compounds has been fast. Oil content is lower and polymers less polar than in passenger car tyre (PCR) treads. PCR tread compounds contain SBR and require more polar plasticizers.
“Furthermore, high glass transition temperature is required to ensure traction. Oils with relatively high aromatic content (23-35%) are thus favoured. In my presentation, I’ll be discussing the use of tread compound oil with low aromatic content. It is also beneficial for future supplies,” concludes Mika Lahtinen.
