Nynas Process Oils provide flexible solutions for PVC

Naphthenic oils add value when used as an external lubricant additive or secondary plasticiser in the manufacturing of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and the NYTEX® range offers many technical advantages, whether it’s a flexible or rigid PVC application.

A synthetic plastic polymer used in a large variety of construction materials in addition to many other everyday products and applications, PVC can be both flexible and rigid. Incorporating Nynas oils to the formulation of both types introduces a variety of valuable benefits for manufacturers.

With excellent solvency and a high flash point, the NYTEX® range of naphthenic oils is REACH registered, HSE compliant, and provides a very low migration when used in PVC formulations.

In flexible PVC applications such as soft cables, naphthenic oils reduce friction during extrusion and improve insulation properties. When used in the soles of running shoes, Nynas oils reduce abrasion and improve mechanical properties.

Naphthenic oil is also the preferred choice of internal lubricant in rigid PVC applications including widows, piping and tubing.

“Nynas oils can replace 10-15% of the primary plasticiser, meaning that formulators can lower costs while achieving increased lubricity. This adds value by offering improved processing efficiency, with lower energy consumption,’’ says Ghislain de Quatrebarbes, Market Manager Chemical Industry.

With the naphthenic oils it produces, Nynas aims to create sustainable value for customers and the world around us, and the PVC application is no exception.

“PVC is a thermoplastic. It can be re-melted and is recyclable,’’ adds Ghislain. ‘’We want to help our customers reach their sustainability goals while still providing high-performance products.’’

A prime example can be found in the rubber and tyre application sectors, where Nynas plasticisers are already the preferred choice for compound formulators of synthetic and natural rubbers. With the recent introduction of  NYTEX® BIO 6200, the company’s first bio-based tyre and rubber oil, Nynas has developed an innovative solution designed to support tyre customers with an ambition to become more sustainable, without sacrificing the highest technical standards.

Nynas will be among the international exhibitors participating in the K 2019 plastics and rubber trade fair in Düsseldorf, on 16-23 October, and our experts looks forward to greeting visitors to booth E41, hall 7.1. Meet us there to hear more about NYTEX® oils and what they can bring to your process.
