Nynas takes part in the year´s first major lubricants conference
The OilDoc Conference and Exhibition is one of the most important international meeting places in the fields of lubrication, maintenance and condition monitoring. Nynas will be there as an exhibitor and is also one of the six main sponsors. There will also be presentations given by both Mehdi Fathi-Najafi, Senior Technical Advisor, and Professor Thomas Norrby, Senior Technical Advisor Lubricants.
On 24-26 January, leading industry representatives will gather to hold the OilDoc Conference and Exhibition. This is a biannual event in Rosenheim, Germany, which attracts almost 450 participants and about 45 exhibiting companies, and over 100 technical papers will be presented during the three days of the conference.
The event is organised by OilDoc GmbH, the leading European centre of excellence for educational programmes in the fields of lubrication, oil analysis, condition monitoring and tribology. This year’s conference will provide a comprehensive picture of the opportunities and challenges facing the industry. Areas covered include Fluid Management, Metal working and forming lubrication, Tribology and various aspects relating to Lubricants.
On 24 January, Mehdi Fathi-Najafi will talk on the subject of “Replacement of Group I – a way forward for the lubes and greases”. The background is the fact that the global rationalization of paraffinic Group I refineries has created a great opportunity for lube and grease manufacturers to rationalize their operations by using fewer oil types, which in turn may contribute to better capital employment as well as an improvement in the finished product.
“NybaseTM grade is a blend of highly refined naphthenic oil and paraffinic Group II, offering equivalent solvency to paraffinic Group I but with a significant improvement in low-temperature mobility,” says Mehdi Fathi-Najafi, continuing:
“Furthermore, since both paraffinic Group II oil and the naphthenic oil used for the preparation of Nybase grade have gone through a severe hydro treatment process, fewer impurities and sulphur content respectively enable the final formulation to have better resistance to corrosion. Furthermore, a more refined oil contributes to a better response of additives such as antioxidants.”
In his presentation on 25 January – “Base oil and emulsifier selection; experimental determination of metalworking fluid emulsion stability” – Thomas Norrby will highlight the work that Nynas has carried out at the Technology Centre in Nynäshamn during 2016.
“By investigating the emulsion stability properties of different base oils, optimum formulation conditions for the different base oil types in the study, Naphthenic, Group I and Group II, were established. The relative order of merit could be established, and the Naphthenic base oil produced the most stable emulsions. These kinds of fundamental scientific studies are important for Nynas to share with our peers, and facilitate the selection of base oil for our customers,” believes Thomas Norrby.
