MAMA Bears from Across the Country Roar on O-MAMA.com in Reaction to Sarah Palin’s “Mama Grizzly” PAC Video
San Clemente, CA – July 14, 2010 -- On O-MAMA.com (Short for Opinionated MAMA)—an online destination for news and events from a mom’s perspective— MAMA bears from across the country are weighing in on Sarah Palin’s recently released PAC promotional video likening America’s moms to Mama Grizzly bears.
On July 9, O-MAMA.com posted the following:
Sarah Palin, in conjunction with her political action committee SarahPAC, released her committee’s first YouTube video last Thursday warning of a stampede of pink elephants crossing the line on November 2, 2010. Palin describes a “mom awakening in the past year and a half” because moms “just know when something’s wrong." She says that American women are concerned about their children’s futures and are unhappy with the country’s “fundamental transformation,” metaphorically akin to the “mama grizzlies that rise up on their hind legs when somebody’s coming to attack their cubs.”
MOMism: "I am woman hear me roar!" Our KID-Os know that their O-MAMAs will do whatever it takes to keep them safe, it’s in our genes. The instinct that moms have to protect the vulnerable does not compare to any other group out there.
Sarah Palin has taken this fundamental truth of nature, and plugged it as a campaign slogan to rally female candidates, as well as voters. She aims to use mothering imagery to attract support of many who may not otherwise be involved in the political process. Sarah Palin said “If you thought pit bulls were tough, don’t mess with the mama grizzlies.”
Regardless if O-MAMAs agree or disagree with Mrs. Palin's politics, she proves our point: moms are shaping the future of our country. We all want to keep our children safe and promote the type of future that we want for them. What mama bears say is critical. What mamas do about it though is what separates a "mama grizzly" from the rest of the animal kingdom...don't stand in her way or she'll rip your throat out. Love her or hate her, either way, she makes MAMAs roar!
The users, fans and followers of Opinionated MAMA had a lot to say about Mrs. Palin’s choice of metaphor – regardless of whether or not they agree with her politics. Below is a sampling of comments on the site and on O-MAMA’s Facebook page:
Belle - I like her point of view in some cases :) I’m grateful for her boldness, honesty, and willingness to put herself out there for what she believes will better our nation. I don’t mind the grizzly comparison - I really don’t care for animal analogies but understand her point. I want to see our citizens take over their lives and not ask the gov't (or give them the permission) to take any part of our lives over. Let the gov't take care of our roads and protection services (police, military, etc) - stay out of our personal choices and liberties. This is our country!
OCmama - I agree. I think she's probably a great gal. I worry that she isn't up to the task of leading our country though...that being said, I agree with your points about government control. There needs to be a better balance...common sense regulation that protects the public, but doesn't stifle business. And, I think government should stay out of our personal business (sexuality, religion, etc.), too! Just my opinion fellow pink elephants!
Peggy - A pathetic ruse to connect to half the population using Motherhood as bait. Sorry, Sarah, just because you have a uterus I don't have anything in common with you. You need a lot more grey matter to even consider the Presidency so please stop subjecting us to your half baked ideas about America and work on your own family.
Jennifer - Any real protective "mama bear" would support health care reform that stops punishing women for being women and allows "baby cubs" with pre-existing conditions to be covered no matter what. Supporting THAT is real motherhood. She can make all the analogies she wants, but she's just using her mother status to try to score political points. She's ridiculous.
Tiredmama - I think if we ALL tuned her out, she would become insignificant. But, you are right, if she runs for something, GOD help us all...then, I agree, this passive mom will turn into an activist mom, so she doesn't get voted into something that can impact my life...or the lives of my children. We the people need to stay engaged in the issues...educate ourselves and the people we know and love. This is not a time for us to "pretend" that we get it anymore...it is time for serious people, with serious solutions, run our country. We get the government we vote in...we need to keep moving our country in the right direction.

ABOUT O-MAMA.com
O-MAMA.com—short for Opinionated MAMA—is a new resource for news and events from a mom’s perspective founded on the belief that moms can be a constructive voice in the national dialogue by applying common sense principles honed in motherhood to get to the heart of the issues that matter most to our kids and our country.
Michelle Tingler, a democrat and mother of three and Debbie Devine, a Republican and mother of two created O-MAMA.com to be a civilized forum that connects moms to the political and social issues of our time. Putting parenting lessons in the context of the bigger issues of the day not only makes the site relevant and meaningful on a broad scale, but positions America's moms as a critical voice missing from our country's most important conversations.
Moms from Maine to California have identified O-MAMA as a destination where they can effectively and constructively use their collective skills honed in motherhood to find common ground on the tough issues and create real change in their homes and communities, and for our country. Since its launch in November 2009, traffic to the site has increased over 500% and O-MAMA’s main mamas, Michelle and Debbie, have been featured in REDBOOK magazine, Oprah Radio’s Dr. Laura Berman Show, The Orange County Register, The Chicago Tribune, Coast Magazine, OC Family.com, Raising Arizona Kids, and several other blogs and websites making the connection between the messages in the news of the day and the lessons we are teaching our kids at home.
“Kitchen Table Talk” videos on the site cover a range of topics from guns to gay marriage, health care to terrorism--with a little humor and a lot of common sense. "Interest groups" for moms of every kind, plus chat rooms on all the "hot button" issues of the day encourage America's moms to give a fresh alternative to the often tiresome talking heads across the cable networks. It’s all there on O-MAMA.com, empowering moms and ensuring that CHANGE BEGINS AT HOME.
Registration is free and every MAMA’s opinion counts!
From the kitchen table to Capital Hill to the cable newsrooms and the blogosphere, America’s moms are becoming a powerful force and voice in the political discourse of our country.
