MOUNT LAUREL, NJ (September 29, 2014)OKI Data Americas announces that its C610, C711, and C831 color printers have been tested for Globally Harmonized System (GHS) hazardous chemical labeling applications using Brandywine Drumlabels’ Poly-Twin® labels. Drum labels from Brandywine Drumlabels, LLC were produced using these three OKI devices. These labels were then tested by Brandywine Drumlabels and reported to meet the International Maritime Dangerous Goods 90 day seawater submersion and U.S. Department of Transportation UV resistance requirements for chemical labeling in accordance with the protocol laid out by GHS British Standard 5609 (BS5609).

In order for printed drum and chemical labels to meet the requirements for the various levels of BS5609 standards, the substrate, adhesive and printed graphic must be independently tested. As part of this process, the printed labels are tested for weathering, adhesion and abrasion resistance to prove their durability. GHS also requires users to conform to graphic labeling standards that use a pictogram system with precautionary text warnings. In addition to these performance standards, printed hazardous materials labels must be properly formatted.

The C610 or C711 produce letter- or legal-size labels, while the C831 produces labels up to tabloid-size. With approved label software applications and media, users can create GHS-formatted labels on demand. These OKI printers deliver cost-effective printed materials including brochures, flyers, training collateral and safety data sheets (SDS) in addition to drum labels.

“OKI Data is pleased that three of our printers have been tested for the production of chemical drum labels in conjunction with Brandywine Drumlabels, LLC,” said Carl Taylor, vice president of marketing for OKI Data Americas. “The award-winning C610, C711 and C831 color printers from OKI Data now provide an even broader range of uses and deliver greater value for our customers in the manufacturing and transportation segments.”

The GHS was developed to ensure the safe production, transport, handling, use and disposal of hazardous materials. Its expressed goal is to make the international sale and transportation of hazardous chemicals easier, as well as to make workplace conditions safer for all employees exposed to chemical hazards. The GHS establishes an international list of text and graphics to classify, define and communicate hazards, and provide global uniformity to printed labels and SDS. GHS standards must be in place within the U.S. by June 1, 2015, and are being implemented in 65 countries.

The GHS system affects chemical manufacturers, importers and distributors, and employers who use chemicals. Chemical manufacturers need to classify the hazards of chemicals, and provide labels and SDS to employers receiving their chemicals. Importers and distributors also need to provide labels and SDS to employers to which they are shipping. Chemical manufacturers in the U.S. will be required to use GHS-inspired HCS/HazCom 2012-compliant labels (issued by OSHA) on their packaging, with a series of requirements.
