Swedish op5 and SiteScanner Collaborate - for Monitoring both Inside and Outside the Firewalls!

Sweden-based op5, a company that monitors internal IT systems, and SiteScanner, a company that monitors web services over the Internet, begin a cooperation to enable monitoring of companies’ internal IT systems and external web services.

Pressrelease March 13, 2008

With the web 2.0 trend follows a large number of new web based services. This leads to increased traffic and pressure on companies’ and organizations’ web sites and web functions. It is therefore required that operations can monitor both the internal IT systems and the external web sites and functions that these systems are connected to. To meet this growing need the Swedish companies op5 and SiteScanner start a cooperation that enables for customers to monitor both internal IT systems and services via the web.

”Companies no longer talk about technical applications but rather about business related services. These services are depending on a number of modules in the IT architecture. op5 has products for monitoring of the parts of an architecture that are needed for specific services to function. The cooperation with Sitescanner means that we can now also monitor the parts of a service that lie on the Internet”, said Jan Josephson, Head of Business Development, op5.

When old systems are connected to the web there is a need to monitor both parts. If a change is made in the underlying systems, that may have unwanted consequences for the users of the service. For instance, web pages can take long to download, or the service cannot collect information from underlying databases.

“The collaboration is interesting since Sweden’s leading companies within the supplementary fields of external and internal monitoring now offer a powerful total solution. We monitor from the outside and op5 monitors from the inside. The technical integration means that all monitoring and alarm handling can be controlled from a single control panel”, said Olle Bodelius, CEO, Sitescanner.

This is how SiteScanner monitors web sites and web functions:

  • All monitoring is done from a distance via SiteScanner’s monitoring servers that are located in 10 different places in northern Europe. The infrastructure covers all the major Nordic Internet operators.

  • Through a so-called transaction robot it is possible to control that a multistep process on a web site functions from a user’s perspective. Just like a ‘real’ user, the robot can enter the web site and perform e.g. an etrade purchase or do a booking.

  • When operations are disturbed, an alarm is immediately sent by SMS and/or email to the customers

  • The cooperation with op5 enables for the customer to identify where the problem is located in the underlying IT systems

  • Since SiteScanner’s monitoring services are web based there is no need for installation of hardware or software on the customer’s side
