Columbus, Ohio – Operation Lifesaver, Inc.’s (OLI) President and CEO Joyce Rose is pleased to announce that Gena Shelton is now the state coordinator for Ohio Operation Lifesaver. The state program’s board of directors announced her arrival Friday.
Gena has an extensive background working for and with nonprofit organizations of all sizes and scopes. Prior to joining OL, she worked as a consultant assisting nonprofit organizations with planning, programming and outreach. She spent the beginning of her career working in higher education, representing Ohio’s nonprofit colleges and universities before government and regulatory agencies. Gena holds a Juris Doctor from The Ohio State University, Moritz College of Law, as well as a master’s degree in nonprofit management.
She replaces long-time Ohio coordinator Steve Friday, who became deputy director of security and safety at the Ohio Statehouse.
“We’re delighted to welcome Gena to the Operation Lifesaver family,” said Joyce Rose, president and CEO of OLI. “And we’re grateful for Steve’s service and the personal time he has lent us to ensure a smooth transition at Ohio Operation Lifesaver.”
A native of Clarksburg, Ohio, Gena currently lives in Columbus with her husband Mike, daughter Maddie and four-legged children Hank and Sophie. She also serves on the University Area Commission, which acts as a link between neighbors and City of Columbus officials.
“The work that Operation Lifesaver does in Ohio is critical,” said Shelton. “Our state ranked among the top 10 states for crossing collisions and trespasser fatalities last year. I have big shoes to fill. I hope to continue Steve’s work of fostering new connections and bringing more collaboration between Ohio Operation Lifesaver and communities within our state to deliver our core safety messages.”
Operation Lifesaver, Inc., has 49 state programs (Virginia and Maryland operations are combined), each directed by state coordinators who manage a team of volunteers, plan awareness-raising activities and conduct rail safety and anti-trespass training.
