And here's how...
With the Tour de France (or Tour de Yorkshire) around the corner, Wiggo wannabes are painting their bikes yellow in celebration of the famous Maillot Jaune.
Thanks to the Tour’s arrival on these shores and the success of Britain’s cyclists, a phenomenal number of people are jumping into the saddle and taking up the sport.
Whether you’ve recently bought a cheap second-hand bike or your old bike is looking in need of some TLC, it couldn’t be simpler to add a little French fancy with a splash of yellow thanks to Rust-Oleum’s Painter’s Touch spray paint in either Marigold or Sun Yellow.
What you will need
- A bike in need of some TLC
- Rust-Oleum’s Painter’s Touch in either Marigold or Sun Yellow
- Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer (dependent on condition of your bicycle)
- Rust-Oleum Surface Primer
- Newspaper/ Dust sheets
- Masking tape
- Wire brush
- Sandpaper
- Damp sponge
HOW TO BLING YOUR BIKE
- Move your bike out to an open space in the garden or well-ventilated garage on top of a large dust sheet or some old newspapers. You may want to cover the surrounding area with additional dust sheets/ newspaper to protect it from spray mist
- Dismantle the bicycle so the frame is clear of components such as saddle, chain, wheels, brakes, etc
- Knock off any loose rust on the frame with a wire brush and give it a light sanding. Wipe clean with a damp sponge to ensure it is free from rust, dirt, oil and grease. Allow to dry and mark off any parts that you do not want to be painted with masking tape.
- Treat any areas of rust with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer according to the instructions on the can and allow to dry
- Apply a couple of light coats of Rust-Oleum Surface Primer spray
- Apply your top coat of either Marigold or Sun Yellow. Follow the application tips and drying times on the can. When you are happy that the frame is well covered, leave to dry
- Reassemble all removed parts when dry
TIP: you can also spray the saddle and wheels / spokes (excluding the tyres) with Rust-Oleum Direct to Plastic or Direct to Vinyl sprays if required
