Glasgow, UK - More than 100 volunteers from Optical Express are set to play a leading role in this year’s STV Appeal as the annual fundraising drive culminates in a week-long line up of special TV shows.

Staff from the eye care provider’s Glasgow contact centre will field donation calls on Wednesday 8 October and Thursday 9 October when STV programmes highlight the work of the charity, which was founded to help children and young people in poverty across Scotland.

A number of staff will also take part in The Big Live, a two-and-a-half hour star-studded show hosted by Scots presenter Lorraine Kelly. As part of the show, which features entertainment, stand-up comedy, sketches and live music, a host of Scottish celebrities will take calls from members of the public as they pledge their support. The calls will then be processed by Optical Express contact centre staff.

Optical Express has supported the STV Appeal since it was launched in 2011.

In September, a team of more than 30 Optical Express staff raised more than £2,000 for the STV Appeal by taking part in Pedal for Scotland 2014’s 47-mile Challenge Ride between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The company also donated a treatment voucher with a value of £4,000 to the STV Appeal Grand Online Charity Auction.

Optical Express Call Centre Manager, Andrew Miller said: “I’m proud of the fantastic effort by our team here in Glasgow, who are giving up their own time to donate their expertise to the STV Appeal.

“This is the fourth year that Optical Express has supported the appeal and our commitment increases every year.  In addition to taking calls from people wishing to donate to the STV Appeal we’ve also taken part in a number of fundraising initiatives throughout the year.”

“We passionately believe that tackling child poverty in Scotland will help to ensure that young people have the best possible opportunities while growing up.”

The STV Appeal was established by STV and the Hunter Foundation not only to support children and young people affected by child poverty in Scotland but also to raise awareness of the issue. One in five children in Scotland are affected by poverty – amounting to more than 200,000 young people.

The STV Appeal has raised more than £5.6 million since it was launched in 2011.
