Mitsubishi Electric and Optillion First to Exceed 10 Gigabit Ethernet Standards and Interoperability Test
Mitsubishi Electric and Optillion First to Exceed 10 Gigabit Ethernet Standards and Interoperability Test Stockholm, Sweden-July 4, 2002-With their interoperability tests exceeding the standards of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Mitsubishi Electric and Optillion are the first transceiver manufacturers to interoperate and extend standard 10GBASE-LR link distance by over 100%. Operating beyond the defined standards, the two companies provide this enhanced capability, providing the critical second source option desired by service providers and operators. Customers will have the ability to control costs and still meet additional 10 Gbit/s requirements in campus and enterprise applications, as well as longer link distances for metro. The companies demonstrated that their 10 Gbit/s XENPAK transceivers for 10GBASE-LR are able to reach in excess of 20 km, using prototypes designed with less variation on important transceiver transmission parameters. No other significant change was needed to achieve the extended reach with their existing receiver designs, based on PIN detectors, which enable the use of the same low cost optic structure as the companies currently shipping products. Standard product that performed the interoperability tests over 10 km SMF was Mitsubishi Electric transceiver MF-11KCXB-001WA and Optillion transceiver TOP 3010-SC. "We have demonstrated the interoperability of the XENPAK transceiver based on the IEEE802.3ae specification," said Toshiyuki Hirai, Deputy Manager of Mitsubishi Electric's Optical Equipment Department. "Through this test, industrial customers can have confidence that Mitsubishi Electric adheres strictly to industry standards." "We are very excited to announce these results," stated Patrik Evaldsson, CEO of Optillion. "By performing this test with Mitsubishi's extremely skilled engineers, we have been able to show that Optillion and Mitsubishi can both meet and will exceed the standards for longer reach applications." Mitsubishi Electric's XENPAK module, the MF-11KCXB-001WA, is designed in compliance with the XENPAK MSA and IEEE 802.3ae standards for 10GBASE- LR. 10km application samples of the MF-11KCXB-001WA are available and have been evaluated with high optical performance by major customers. The Mitsubishi Electric's XENPAK for 10GBASE-ER, which is able to reach in excess of 40 km, is in development and first shipments are scheduled for the last quarter of 2002. For its current family of products, Optillion uses the standard form factor established by the XENPAK Multi-Source Agreement. Optillion's TOP 3010 transceiver for 10 km is currently available. The 'enhanced TOP 3010' transceiver is in development and first shipments are scheduled for the last quarter of 2002.
