Cycle the Tour of Britain with Ordnance Survey’s new app
Building on the success of OS Ride, a Chris Boardman backed Grand Départ app that featured the British stages of the Tour de France, Ordnance Survey has now launched a new and improved Tour of Britain version: OS Ride the Tour.
Available from the App Store now, the free and easy to use iOS app features preloaded detailed routes of all eight of the Tour of Britain stages and allows cyclists to effectively plan and ride the same challenging routes that many of our Olympic cycling champions, including defending champion Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish, have been riding. It is also ideal for spectators of the race wanting the best view of their heroes during the closing stages.
The app comes bundled with a selection of trusted mapping scales and height data, and enables cyclists to track their progress, speed, distance and time, as well as displaying accurate height data showing the elevation across all the routes. Cyclists can also celebrate and share their achievements with friends and family via social media.
As well as featuring this year’s Tour of Britain stages, which started in Liverpool on 7 September and ends in London on 14 September, the app also contains all five stages of this year’s The Women’s Tour of Britain, which was won by the legendary Marianne Vos. Ordnance Survey is also planning to release historical cycling routes through the OS Ride the Tour app and is preparing to split the stages of the men’s and women’s Tours into smaller segments, making the app a fantastic tool for all levels of road cycling.
Nick Giles, Ordnance Survey Leisure Managing Director, says: “The Tour of Britain is one of the most challenging events in the British sporting calendar. Now cyclists can experience the thrill of riding the stages for themselves while using our trusted and accurate maps. We are delighted to be the official mapping partner of the Tour and the app is a must for any keen road cyclist. The digital maps featured also contain valuable tourist information for those planning to make the most of the areas surrounding the Tour stages.”
