The German hospital Amalie-Sieveking Krankenhaus, part of the Albertinen group in the metropolitan area of north-east Hamburg has together with the Stormarn rescue services made an agreement with Ortivus to buy the pre-hospital telemedicine, decision support and documentation system MobiMed. This is the first commercial MobiMed installation in the German market.

The Ortivus MobiMed system supports patient fast track procedures that reduce time to treatment significantly. As the MobiMed system allows shared patient data access between ambulance crew and medical expertise at the emergency department of a hospital a decision to go directly to an operating table or a CT scan can be taken directly in the ambulance. The reduced time to treatment allowed by fast-track procedures is critical in patients with an acute myocardial infarction or a stroke. The flow of data, as the vital 12-channel ECG and other documented observations, supports the hospital to be prepared and triage the patient even before the patient arrives.

“We are proud to introduce this solution and offer the inhabitants in Stormarn and our metropolitan area a unique preparedness to high quality emergency treatment. This is the beginning of a new care system where the ambulance service is an integrated part of the expertise available at the hospital. We expect to provide more accurate treatment to the individual patient” says Ralf Pinnau, Managing Director Amalie Sieveking-Krankenhaus

“Our vision is that patients get fast and accurate treatment when and where they need it. Ortivus is the leading enabler of a technology which brings substantially increased efficiency for the whole healthcare system and we are convinced that the implementation of MobiMed in the metropolitan Hamburg area will bring substantial benefits” says Jan B Andersson, CEO Ortivus.

The solution will be rolled out in four ambulances during the first quarter 2009.

Background
The number of patients with cardiovascular diseases keeps increasing in the general population. It is proven that fast response and accurate treatment in the acute phase is a key success factor for survival. Experience from Sweden show that early pre-hospital detection combined with fast-track procedures, by-passing the emergency department and going directly to the operating table, has shortened the time to a coronary intervention by 30 minutes in patients with myocardial ischemia.

At scene and during transport MobiMed continuously provides the hospital with information about the patient. Based on vital data and observations and treatments collected through the inbuilt electronic patient record medical expertise in the hospital can support the ambulance crew and at the same time prepare for providing an accurate and fast treatment with improved medical outcome for the patient as well as improved efficiency as a result.
