Opera Announces Global Frame Agreement with global mobile operator for Skyfire´s Rocket Optimizer Video and Media Optimization Solution
Oslo, Norway - June 12, 2013. Opera Software announced today a Global Frame Agreement with a major international mobile operator whereby Skyfire´s Rocket Optimizer video and media optimization solution has been selected as the lead supplier across their mobile networks for all countries in which they operate. Under the terms of the 3 year contract, Opera in partnership with a prominent multinational network supplier was awarded a “single lead vendor” win after an extensive RFP. Each of the operator’s subsidiaries will have the opportunity to opt-in to the GFA under already-agreed terms.
The scope of the contract covers delivery and integration of the Skyfire Rocket Optimizer software into this Mobile Operator’s network and installing the Skyfire’s cloud media adaptation engine in the Carrier’s own cloud data centers. Opera can provide this carrier-grade, virtualization-ready solution through its recent acquisition of Skyfire Labs, a leader in mobile video optimization and cloud solutions. Opera announced that transaction February 15, 2013 and it closed March 14, 2013. Rocket Optimizer software allows mobile operators to leverage cloud computing to optimize virtually any video and other multimedia on crowded cell towers, including 2G, 3G and 4G LTE networks. Rocket Optimizer on average provides mobile networks a 50-60 percent boost in capacity by reducing the size of video and other multimedia content as needed to fit the available bandwidth.
Skyfire can detect not only congestion but also when specific users are facing poor quality of experience or connections that need assistance (due to being far from a cell tower, indoors, or behind walls and obstructions to the radio signal), and intervene in milliseconds. This can minimize the long start times, rebuffering, and stalls on video and audio streams that frustrate mobile users around the world. The approach aligns with the trend toward SDN (software-defined networking) and NFV (network function virtualization) among telecommunications operators, thanks to its elastic and virtualization-friendly cloud architecture.
Further information will be released in the near term following public announcements from the other parties in the contract.
