Alpine time out in Gurgl: summery elation at over 2000 meters
Alpine nature and service at the highest level. This is what Gurgl in upper Ötztal is known for. The ultimate ALPINE TIME OUT invites mountain enthusiasts to explore the mountain world around Gurgl on foot, by cable car or bicycle between 23 June to 17 September. Excursion destinations such as the Motorcycle Experience World, active culinary enjoyment and exciting events of the Alpine ARTtime round off this truly unique experience. This year's highlight: SCENARIOS FOR PEACE exhibition at Gurgl Carat from 04 August to 15 September.
No trace of the hustle and bustle of everyday life and the heat waves of the lowlands. Embedded in an idyll of mighty three-thousand-meter peaks, mountain lakes, bubbling brooks and centuries-old stone pine forests, Gurgl is a holiday resort that is good for you all year round. As part of the ALPINE TIME OUT, you can clear your mind while hiking or (e)biking. Everything revolves around holistic deceleration: hiking and feeling at ease, indoor and outdoor wellness amid nature, savoring and enjoying.
Hiking and enjoying the high alpine mountains
The modern mountain lifts and gondolas whisk you away to high alpine regions in no time at all. The vantage platform at Kirchenkar gondola (2,839 m) and Hohe Mut Alm mountain restaurant at Hohe Mut gondola (2,670 m) offer the best vista of a whole sea of mountain peaks. Believe it or not, 21 summits higher than three thousand meters can be admired here on a clear day. It is only a few steps to the nearby huts and alpine inns and to the Nature Park info point, "Glacier - Climate - High Alpine Research".
“Sunrise for all senses” is brand new. Early in the morning in fresh mountain air at over 2,000 meters, participants explore the awakening mountain world using Swarovski binoculars, or experience activities such as yoga, glacier crevasse tours or adventurous hikes. Followed by fine regional delicacies at breakfast on Hohe Mut Alm. The package can be booked in the Adventure Shop run by Ötztal Tourismus.
If you are looking for a nice place to linger, you can rent a picnic backpack at Hohe Mut Alm, filled with traditional delicacies from the region. The Perrier-Jouët gourmet gondola provides a very private moment of luxury. During a panoramic ride on Kirchenkar gondola, guests enjoy mouth-watering specialties prepared by the Top Mountain Crosspoint Restaurant in Hochgurgl.
(E)Biking at the Diamond of the Alps
Thanks to its top location in Ötztal, Gurgl also offers huge variety on two wheels. Right on your doorstep there is the winding road up to Timmelsjoch pass, one of the most popular racing bike routes in the Alps. Kirchenkar gondolas I and II and Hohe Mut gondola I are perfect for mountain bike fans who want to climb the peaks effortlessly. Thanks to comfy e-bikes, nature fans can also ascend to destinations such as scenic Langtalereckhütte or Kirchenkarhütte and reward themselves with hearty hut delights. The culinary e-bike tours promise a mountain experience with a very special twist. A guide takes you to the most beautiful secret places in the region every week. During the moderate tours with electronic support, several stops are made to taste the best alpine delicacies.
Excursions: indoors and across the mountains
Under no circumstances should you miss a visit to the Motorcycle Experience World at the foot of the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road. On an exhibition area of 4,500 m2, Europe's highest motorcycle museum shows over 500 exhibits from all eras as well as multimedia impressions straight "from the road". The original experience, a ride over Timmelsjoch pass, ranks among the undisputed highlights of a summer holiday in Gurgl. The highest pass in the Eastern Alps (2,500 m) leads from North to South Tyrol and can be conquered by car, motorbike, public bus or racing bike. Along the way, six stations of the ultimate “Timmelsjoch Drive” invite you to stop and learn more about culture, history and nature on both the Austrian and Italian sides of the route. Back in Gurgl, it's really worth taking a look at the event calendar of the state-of-the-art Gurgl Carat Congress Center. Besides congresses and conferences also concerts and regional events - for example, as part of the Alpine ARTtime - take place here.
Alpine ARTtime presenting SCENARIOS FOR PEACE
In the 2023 summer, Gurgl will also become a studio and combine the mountain scenery with artistic inspiration. The program includes several concerts, regional crafts and a performance art exhibition with the symbolic title SCENARIOS FOR PEACE. From 04 August to 15 September 2023, the South Tyrolean media artist Sissa Micheli will be presenting her photo series on the subject of war and peace at Gurgl Carat in cooperation with AUDIOVERSUM Innsbruck. Scenes of her artistic examination are selected war zones and places of the Alpine Wall in the mountain massifs of upper Pustertal valley. The main focus is on interventions for peace. Together with musicians from "Ötztal’s Master Class", who rehearse annually with experienced violinists from the Vienna Philharmonic in Längenfeld, the artist will stage peace performances at several places of strength around Gurgl especially for the SCENARIOS FOR PEACE exhibition and will process them acoustically and visually. These recordings will then be on display in the form of photographs and videos at Gurgl Carat. The vernissage will take place on 04 August as part of the Gurgl Music Forum at Gurgl Carat. Afterwards, the exhibition is open daily from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm until mid-September, admission is free.
Traditional crafts, culinary and musical treats
From 13 to 15 August, locals present their skills at the Handicraft & Delicacies Market on the forecourt of Gurgl Carat. Fine craftsmanship and entertainment await visitors, as well as homemade products such as farmer’s bread, smoked sausages, bacon, schnapps, yoghurt, milk and cheese. Handmade and regional is the motto.
Another highlight is the Music Forum from 02 to 11 August. Within the framework of two orchestra weeks, varied programs will be developed under the direction of professional lecturers and presented in four public concerts. A unique experience full of music, enthusiasm and inspiration - both for the orchestra members and the audience.
