Outokumpu – Enhanced Prodec delivers superior machinability

Outokumpu today announced availability of enhanced Prodec® stainless steel bars delivering superior machinability. Enabled by further product development, Prodec range grades now offer industry’s best machining speeds. According to Outokumpu’s tests (V15 test), Prodec® can achieve machining speeds up to 300 m/minute, resulting in a double tool life compared to competing materials in the market.

Outokumpu is presenting its Prodec range at the Stainless Steel World exhibition in Maastricht, The Netherlands, November 17–19, 2015. The Prodec range comprises stainless steels grades that are optimized for consistently superior machinability, enabling faster machining speeds, longer tool life and enhanced quality.

By using Outokumpu Prodec, customers can optimize machining speeds to gain significant cost savings per component (up-to 50% savings depending on the application). Machining at higher speeds also helps to avoid built up edge on inserts and leads to a better surface quality and tolerances.

Outokumpu Prodec is available as hexagon, square, flat and round bars, as well as rolled billets and plate in Prodec grades 304L/4307, 316L/4404, 303/4305 and 17-4PH. These are suitable for machining applications such as fasteners, flanges, valves, pressure fittings, nuts, bolts and screws, gears, shafts, and bearings.

V15 test is a standardized machining test that allows comparison between materials. The test finds the cutting speed that result in 15-minute tool lifetime when turning with cemented carbide tooling. The tests conducted by Outokumpu included bars from seven competing European stainless steel producers in machinable 304L/1.4307 and 316L/1.4404 grades.
