Outokumpu’s strong sustainability performance has been recognized again by the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) in their 2012 review. This is the sixth consecutive year Outokumpu has maintained its membership in the DJSI World. In the 2012 review Outokumpu is among the four best steel companies worldwide included in the DJSI World index.

Outokumpu’s overall score improved from the previous year. Outokumpu was particularly recognized for its environmental work and received highest possible points in the climate strategy, environmental policy and management systems. Positive feedback was also received in the occupational health and safety category where Outokumpu obtained the highest scores in the industry.

“At Outokumpu, sustainability is at the core of our operations, as stainless steel in itself is such sustainable material. One concrete example of our environmental leadership is the recycled content of Outokumpu steel, which is 90% against the industry average of 60%. Our unique track record in sustainability is the result of a long-term commitment. The recognition we receive is encouraging and spurs us to improve our performance even further,” says CEO Mika Seitovirta.

The DJSI indexes are ratings that rank the top companies in the economic, environmental and social performance, selected among the largest 2,500 companies worldwide. Their indexes serve as benchmark and reference point for investors and companies alike. The analysis is carried out each year by an independent assessment party SAM Sustainable Asset Management AG.
