TRADE PRESS RELEASE

Outokumpu LDX 2101® is now officially approved material to use when building pressure equipment. Fabricators can refer to the European Approval of Material (EAM) to show conformity with the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) when using flat
LDX 2101®  ≤10 mm. The European Approval of Material for lean duplex was publicly announced in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) on 27 March 2012.

The Pressure Equipment Directive requires that materials used for pressure equipment must either
• comply with a Harmonised Standard Material;
• be covered by a European Approval of Material (EAM); or
• have particular material appraisal (PMA).

For applications fabricated of LDX 2101® in other dimensions than ≤10 mm, a Particular Material Appraisal (PMA) will show the applications’ conformity with the European Pressure Equipment Directive.

“The European Approval of Material achievement promotes and makes it easier for fabricators to use LDX 2101® in pressure equipment and we hope this generates opportunities for new projects for us as well”, says Claes Tigerstrand from Outokumpu Avesta Research Centre.

Outokumpu LDX 2101®, a lean duplex grade developed and patented by Outokumpu, has a low nickel content of only 1.5% making its price less dependent on the volatile price of nickel. In addition to good corrosion resistance, LDX is twice as strong as standard austenitic grade such as 304 and it has received great success in demanding applications worldwide.
