To provide solution to projects and applications in areas with higher risk of corrosion, Outokumpu now offers its Deco surfaces on Outokumpu Forta DX 2205 duplex stainless steel. Forta DX 2205 has proven to sufficiently weather even in the warm marine environments for example in the Middle East.
In the past few decades, stainless steel has become the choice for the most beautiful landmarks around the world thanks to its perfect combination of durability, corrosion resistance and aesthetics. Among the stainless steel grades, the austenitic stainless steel grade Outokumpu Supra 316/316L has proved to be the most popular choice for the architectural applications. However, certain demanding conditions, like the warm marine environment, which suffer from a lack of rain and dusty winds, expose the material to a risk of corrosion that may compromise the aesthetic appearance and potentially even its load-bearing capacity in the long term. For these environments Outokumpu Forta DX 2205 provides even better corrosion resistance which also allows thinner plates and thus weight reduction.
Says Outokumpu Product Manager Jörn Teipel: “Outokumpu Supra 316/316L is a great material, which has suited well the needs of our customers around the world. It has been used with Outokumpu Deco surface finish in famous landmarks such as One World Trade Center in New York, USA, Birmingham New Street Station in UK, and Ping An Finance Center in Shenzhen, China. However, we always strive to find the optimal solution for our customers, and to address the specific concerns of our customers, we wanted to take on the challenge and look for a solution for it."
Careful analysis of various experiments and testing indicate that higher-performance grade, often in combination with a good surface finish and established cleaning routines, is required to maintain pristine surface of stainless steel in this environment.
Teipel says, “Grade and surface are the two major factors in selecting stainless steel materials. When the right combination of grade and surface finish is selected, the material can demonstrate its real value and become less expensive over the lifecycle due to its low maintenance costs. At Outokumpu, we have a dedicated team that is specialized in guiding and consulting our customers in selection of materials. The Deco pattern on Forta DX 2205 will give confidence to customers designing landmarks even in challenging environments.”
