Outokumpu’s rod mill in Sheffield wins RoSPA occupational health and safety gold award

Outokumpu’s rod mill in Sheffield, UK has won a gold achievement award in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2014 for the site’s occupational health and safety management systems and practices. RoSPA undertake these awards annually and their purpose is to recognise companies for their commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention at work.

Says CEO Mika Seitovirta: “At Outokumpu, safety is our first priority. We believe that all accidents are preventable, and our target is zero accidents. Ambitious targets spur us to improve our safety performance on a continuous basis. We have an excellent track record in occupational health and safety, so we are extremely proud of the latest recognition by RoSPA.”

Says Rob Charlesworth, EHSQ Manager, Outokumpu rod mill: “We saw the RoSPA awards as an opportunity to benchmark our systems against the top industries in the UK. Our management team is fully committed to manage and improve safety. Achieving a gold award is quite unusual for a first-time applicant and demonstrates the amount of effort of the Outokumpu team over the past few years.” 

RoSPA is an acronym of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. The society’s mission is to save lives and reduce injuries, and its history dates back 58 years.

Outokumpu’s rod mill in Sheffield, UK is part of the Long Products business line and employs 114 stainless steel professionals. Production of long products in Sheffield includes billet produced at the melt shop, billets are then used for wire rod manufacture in the rod mill which is then subsequently made into bar at the bar finishing facility.
