Outokumpu delivers duplex stainless steel rebar to the construction of the traffic route Norra Länken in Stockholm, Sweden. Norra Länken is a large infrastructure investment in a new traffic route around the northern parts of central Stockholm. The purpose is to reduce traffic and improve the environment in the city centre.
The Swedish construction company Skanska has ordered some 300 tonnes of Outokumpu LDX 2101® duplex stainless steel rebar to be used in a viaduct.
In addition to the unique corrosion resistance and durability properties of LDX 2101®, the grade offers good price stability compared to traditional stainless steel grades since it contains a lower percentage of nickel.
"Stainless steel rebar is strong, making it an ideal choice of material in infrastructure projects where service life demands are often over a hundred years. Stainless steel rebar has high corrosion resistance and it withstands highly corrosive road salts better than carbon steel, which is traditionally used in rebar. In addition, future maintenance work is minimised, avoiding severe traffic disruptions and large costs, says Mats Segerbäck from Outokumpu.
"Outokumpu's technical competence was valuable in choosing the right steel grade. Throughout the process they have been highly professional. Also, the price stability of LDX 2101® is important to us since this is such a long term project", says Lars Tidegård at Skanska.
The rebar is produced at Outokumpu's plant in Sheffield, UK.
Duplex rebar is gaining popularity in concrete reinforcements and it has been used successfully in highly demanding structures such as in bridges and other road infrastructure which show no signs of deterioration after decades of service thus ensuring long life span.
