Outokumpu’s stainless is the material of choice for an award winning design phone booth, which is been adapted by many major social media companies at their global headquarters. As the public phone booths have mostly disappeared with the era of mobile phones, the spread of open-plan offices rise a demand for soundproof phone booths for calls in office premises.

Described as “the world’s smallest office” and taking around 1 sqm of floor space, the booth creates a noise free work environment. It won one of the most significant furniture design prizes, the NeoCon Gold Award in Chicago, USA this summer. The business edition of the booth is covered with polished stainless steel exterior by Outokumpu. The thin plate made of Core 441 is attached to the birch plywood framework magnetically, so there are no screws used.

The superb smoothness of the stainless exterior would not have been possible without intensive support and advice from Outokumpu during the product development process.

“Outokumpu helped us to find the right magnetic grade and the ideal surface finish. Steel is robust, easy to handle and offers good sound insulation properties – plus a fabulous, sleek look. Now we have the pure, clean surface we wanted in the first place”, says Ossi Paija, CEO of the Finnish company Framery.
