Outokumpu stainless steel strengthens Lossendammen dam locks in Sweden

Outokumpu delivered duplex stainless steel for the two locks, or spillway gates, in the upgraded Lossendammen dam structure in Central Sweden. One aim of the project was to secure the management of increasing water flows in the future in a safe manner. This year, the most of the renewed dam structure is in place after a 3-year project.

Lossendammen, originally built 50 years ago, is part of the critical infrastructure in Sweden. Harsh climate conditions and constant contact with flowing water called for robust solutions. The dam can hold an impressive 500 million cubic meters of water, and it serves 17 hydropower plants along the River Ljusnan.

Outokumpu’s high performance Forta LDX 2101 duplex stainless steel was chosen for the two arched locks. The grade has high strength and high resistance to stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue, which is important in the dam structures. Yet, this duplex grade has good weldability enabling the desired arched shape. Forta LDX 2101 also enables thinner structures and therefore weight reductions without compromising safety, which was another decisive factor in the project.

“Outokumpu plate service center advised the contractor on the advantages of stainless steel in this project. The benefits for the customer were weight saving, easier transportation and maintenance. In addition to delivering the duplex stainless steel, Outokumpu did all the cutting and bending of the stainless steel plates before delivering them to the constructor,” says Sales Manager Thomas Funke at Outokumpu PSC. All material for the project was sourced through BE Group, one of the leading distributors of stainless steel in Sweden and Finland.
