Outokumpu has provided 1,000 metric tonnes of Supra 316L/4404 stainless steel for the China Resources Group headquarters in mainland China. This 392.5-meter-tall skyscraper is currently under construction and set for completion in 2018. The stainless steel was delivered as Deco Linen finished sheets.
The innovative new building designed by KPF architects employs stainless steel in 56 external columns that support its glass facade, creating an iconic form without the need for internal columns to break up open floor plans.
Located across the South China Sea from Hong Kong in China's highly industrialized Pearl River Delta, Shenzhen is one of the most important economic centers in the country. The China Resources Group, a Fortune 500 company, chose a location in Shenzhen Bay that provides and unparalleled view overlooking the busy port city. The focal point of the new project is an innovative skyscraper with 71 stories, four of which are underground.
With a circular floor plan that grows increasingly smaller, the tower tapers to a sharp point as it reaches toward the sky. To offer the building all the support and the structural integrity it needs to withstand heavy monsoon rains without losing its aesthetic appeal, the designers have incorporated a unique series of external columns in a diagrid form: 28 columns create a diamond-like shape at the base of the tower that is reflected in another 28 columns on the tower's upper section.
To support the building over the long term, stainless steel is the ideal material for façade structural applications. Stainless steel has become quite popular for facade applications in China, replacing other materials, such as aluminum, as it has a longer lifecycle and is easy to clean and maintain.
Stainless steel is vital for use on projects in coastal regions for its corrosion resistance capacities and reduced maintenance needs. Unlike in more inland cities, Shenzhen's seaside location means the air and rain is more corrosive due to the salt and moisture in the climate.
