Toronto, ON, Aug. 28, 2012--Sunday, September 9, 2012 marks the 11th annual Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope in 47 cities across Canada.

“The Walk increases awareness at a national level while raising crucial funds that support research and programs for women living with this devastating disease. Proceeds from the Walk support our vision of improved education and prevention of ovarian cancer,” says Elisabeth Ross, CEO of Ovarian Cancer Canada. "Ovarian cancer is the most fatal women’s cancer; yet it is often overlooked and under-diagnosed. The Walk provides an opportunity to give a voice to the injustices of this disease."

Ovarian Cancer Canada’s recently launched “Injustices of Ovarian Cancer” video also does an amazing job of increasing awareness of ovarian cancer and educating the viewer on the reality of this disease. Watch it at the following link: ovariancanada.org/Donate/Injustices-of-Ovarian-Cancer

There is no screening test for ovarian cancer and symptoms are vague, so most women are diagnosed at a later stage when their five-year survival rate is less than 30%. Approximately 1 in 4 women still think that a Pap test screens for ovarian cancer, it does not. A Pap test screens for cervical cancer. According to a 2011 study by Charity Intelligence Canada, only 2.1% of cancer donations in Canada go to ovarian cancer, yet it is the most fatal women’s cancer.

"Funds from the Walk are an important resource that continues to support the ovarian cancer research community in Canada," says Dr. Barbara Vanderhyden, who is the ‘Corinne Boyer Chair in Ovarian Cancer Research at the University of Ottawa’ and Chair of the research Committee for Ovarian Cancer Canada.
