Exciting eco weekend promotes inclusion for people with special needs

Holifield Farm in Cornwall announce Social Enterprise: non-profit camping weekend for people with learning disabilities and their carers and families

Holifield Camping Weekend, previously known as Holi-day, is an annual 2 day non-profit event and camp over, aimed at people with additional needs and learning difficulties. In its  6th year the event allows carers, families and people with additional needs a fun and supportive environment to connect with local community groups, service providers, artists, colleges and schools.

Like any family friendly festival, the weekend is crammed full of workshops, music, campfires and socialising with like minded people. With a karaoke and disco, live barn dance and a fantastic line up showcasing the cream of local musical crop such as festival favourites Jonah’s Lift and incredible virtually mute singer Kyle Coleman; the weekend is set to be an all encompassing extravaganza. Each evening there will be a campfire to settle down and create conversation and cohesion between camping weekenders and Saturday morning starts with wake up yoga to re energise all on site.

Twenty five years of community work and sustainable living have seen Holifield Farm improve its 32 acre organic smallholding, set in an area of outstanding natural beauty not far from Cornwall's Helford River. Funds raised through a separate annual festival later on in the year have provided the project the ability to run the entire Holifield Camping Weekend as a sustainable energy festival. With environmentalism as one of the Farm's key ethos, they try to provide all energy used on site from solar, wind and biodiesel and keep use of disposable plastic to a minimum. 

On site meals at The Holifield Camping Weekend Cafe are reasonably priced and use locally, ethically sourced food, some of which has been grown and tended on the farm itself by the trainees from the Day Centre. Committed to providing a quality needs-led service to trainees, the centre currently has 38 trainees attending on their own personal timetables.  Participating in daily activities such as horticulture and gardening, animal care, conservation, walks, arts and crafts gives service users independent life skills. Holifield Farm owner Rob said, "we are pro-choice and pro respect, so everything at Holifield is inclusive and gives our trainees the opportunities to make choices."

Tickets can be purchased through the website or on the gates, at just £20 for a 2-day camping pass, or £10 per day without camping. Costs for support workers and carers are by donation only. Gates open on Friday 4th at 11am and will close again once everyone is packed up on Sunday morning, after a hearty breakfast at the cafe.
