DALLAS—Change Is Okay with Kacie Shay: A Story About A Family (Signature Publishing Group, an imprint of Panache Partners, fall 2010), inspired by a true story, creates an open dialogue about parents separating. With an endearing title character, a friendly and poetic tone, and colorful watercolor illustrations, the 32-page hardcover book is appropriate for children of all ages. Author Jolie Carpenter holds a master’s degree in professional counseling and marriage and family therapy. Inspired by her niece’s childhood experience, she wrote Change Is Okay with Kacie Shay after extensively researching the subject. Jolie’s philosophies are greatly influenced by the theories of Dr. Judith Wallerstein, largely considered the world’s foremost authority on the effects of divorce on children.

Synopsis: Kacie is a wonderful little girl whose mom and dad love her very much. One day, Mom tells her that Dad will be moving to another house. At first Kacie is sad, but with encouragement from her parents she feels better. Kacie continues to do fun things with each of her parents, and it turns out that change is okay.

Author’s Note: Children feel the anxiety of separation and divorce. They are sad and uncertain about what life will be like afterward and sometimes even blame themselves. With your support and the encouragement of open communication, your children will be able to verbalize their emotions, grieve the loss of the family unit as they know it, and emerge from this challenging situation as emotionally strong individuals.

About the Author: Jolie Carpenter has a master’s degree in professional counseling and marriage and family therapy. As a therapist with a private practice, she helped many families.
