Starla Cassani, the founder of the Colby Foundation, will speak to students at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine on Thursday, March 17th, about organ and tissue donation. This is the second time LECOM Erie will host the Colby Foundation founder. The Colby Cassani Endowed Lectureship series provides a program to prepare future physicians on the need for organ and tissue donations to save people’s lives.
The Colby Foundation was founded in 1995 by Starla and John Cassani, D.O., in memory of their infant son, Colby. Colby died in 1993 when he was 14 months old. Colby’s parents donated his kidneys, liver and heart to three other people so that they could live. The Cassanis established the Colby Foundation to educate others about organ and tissue donation.
Other speakers will include Susan Stuart, R.N., the President and C.E.O. of the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE), and Edward Faber, D.O., LECOM Class of 2003. Dr. Faber works with bone marrow transplant patients. He is an assistant professor of oncology/hematology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. First and second-year LECOM medical students will learn about the importance of organ and tissue donation. They will hear emotional stories about the donors and the patients who lived because of them.
