EU Court Verdict: Don’t Get Caught Out by Excessive Baggage Costs, says Fastlane International

Fly baggage ahead to avoid charges, advises Fastlane

The EU’s Court of Justice controversially ruled last week that airlines can continue imposing checked baggage charges on their passengers. Companies such as Ryanair can charge as much as £70 per bag at peak Christmas and summer holiday seasons.

Spanish law had held that such charges were illegal, but Europe’s top court has overruled this in a test case brought by a Spanish woman.

This leaves budget airlines free to continue charging sometimes prohibitive amounts on checked-in baggage that goes in the hold. Airlines such as Ryanair claim avoiding loading baggage in the hold increases turnaround time and ultimately makes headline ticket prices lower.

Fortunately there is a way to avoid sometimes expensive airline charges for baggage, and all those delays at baggage reclaim. You can send them ahead by parcel courier. Fastlane International’s David Jinks MILT says: ‘It’s surprisingly inexpensive to send luggage ahead by international couriers such as Fastlane, it’s easy to do and affordable.’

David adds: ‘In addition to continuing steep baggage charges, there are other strong reasons why you should consider sending your luggage with an international courier. Delays in getting baggage through customs can be critical, especially for business users. To ensure your items arrive where you need them, when you need them, passengers really should consider sending their important luggage, such as sample goods, ahead.’

There are a few simple things to bear in mind, David adds: ‘Don’t forget that your luggage will not be travelling with you, so make sure you check the transit times and ensure you send your luggage in advance –  with enough time for your luggage to arrive and be waiting for you at your hotel.’

He advises: ‘Contact your hotel or place of accommodation to let them know that your luggage is on its way. That way the staff can keep it safe for you when it arrives.’
