Major Industry report reveals how Amazon is paving the way for 1-hour deliveries and the ‘Internet of Things’ in UK cities
Global delivery experts ParcelHero launches ‘Amazon’s Prime Ambition’ report at Multimodal
Many of the UK’s leading supply chain experts have met at Multimodal 2015, held at Birmingham’s NEC, to discuss pressing issues facing the industry. Global delivery specialists ParcelHero has launched its new key industry report, Amazon’s Prime Ambition, at the three-day event, and discussed its findings with industry experts.
David Jinks, ParcelHero’s Head of Publications, says: ‘Amazon has pioneered its Amazon Logistics operation in the UK, and it creates the opportunity for the company to introduce virtually ‘instant gratification’ services here in the UK; just as it already offers in Seattle and New York. These include Same-Day, and even one-hour, deliveries; fridges and coffee machines that send a message to Amazon when they need refilling, and even the possibility that items can be 3D-printed while on route to customers in the future.’
David adds: ‘Our new report highlights Amazon’s plans to compete head-on in the logistics arena with companies such as UPS and Royal Mail. Amazon can save $3bn a year, including £122 million here in the UK alone, by using its own distribution arm and cutting out middle-men such as the Royal Mail. This also creates the opportunity to introduce a whole range of virtually instant local services, from finding a recommended plummer or joiner, to having items delivered directly into customer’s cars.’
Leading industry figures such as Professor Alan Braithwaite and Sue Terpilowski OBE were amongst those experts discussing issues such as the need for reducing emissions, increasing cooperation and the growth of ‘instant’ internet deliveries. The debates were hosted by the industries’ leading professional body, The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport.
