Spitalfields, London, UK – Catherine Owen, a market trader at London’s historic Old Spitalfields Market is celebrating, having won the coveted title of ‘Leader of the Year’ in the 2011 Specsavers everywoman in Retail awards, held at The Savoy hotel, London.

The judges were wowed that, despite launching a business in the downturn, against all odds, Catherine has carved a successful business from a unique gap in the market - having sold out of last year’s autumn collection within two months. She leads her team with expertise and passion, overseeing the supply chain from design through to production with the factory.

Based in London, Catherine launched her business, Amber & Jade, after years of struggle finding shoes to fit her size-10 feet. She crafted a block of wood with a file to create her vision of the perfect shoe and her business was born.  Having won the ‘Make Your Mark in the Markets’ competition in 2010, Catherine was given a foothold for her budding shoe business with six-months free trading at the market hall’s ever-popular Sunday market.

Catherine commented: “I’m delighted to have won this award and it’s really given my business a boost. Trading at Old Spitalfields Market enables my customers – many of whom have found us via our website www.amberandjade.com - to come over in person and try the shoes on before making a purchase.”

“I’m getting customers travelling from as far away as Canada to buy our shoes, so we must be doing something right! Old Spitalfields Market is renowned for its fashion and this has really helped me to develop my business - plus the goods offered by my fellow traders really complement our collection and add to the market’s appeal to shoppers. ”

Andrew Sparrow, director with Wellington Market Company, the organisation responsible for the day-to-day operation of the market, added: “We are really pleased for Catherine and her team and their on-going success bears testament to all of their hard work. They are an asset to Old Spitalfields Market and we wish them every success in continuing to grow their business.”

Open between 9am and 5pm on Sundays (10am till 4pm Monday-Friday), Old Spitalfields Market is a short walk from Liverpool Street Station and Aldgate East Tube – please visit www.oldspitalfieldsmarket.com for further information.
