TBurton upon Trent, Staffordshire, UK – On Friday 27th August 2010, The Brewery Tap, bar and restaurant in Burton, is playing host to its monthly ‘Firkin Comedy Club’, which has quickly established itself on the comedy circuit. Showcasing an array of top-class comedians to the venue on the last Friday of each month has proved to be a big hit with locals. While the quality of entertainment will have audiences in hysterics, the fantastic hospitality on offer complements to create a thoroughly enjoyable evening, which is sure to be a barrel of laughs! The compere for the evening will be Meryl O'Rourke, a South Londoner who has been storming the UK, Irish, New York and Barcelona comedy circuits for over 10 years, with her thrilling, delighting and disturbing range of topics. James Christopher, film critic for The Times, has said "I'd rather see Meryl than any film", while Jonathan Ross has described her simply as “Fantastic”. The opening act is Noel James, who for eight years has delivered comedy throughout the UK, performing at all the major clubs and festivals, such as Glastonbury, Reading and Edinburgh to name but three. Described by The Independent as someone who "Stands out like a droll giant in a comedy land of trite dwarfs" and by Time Out as a comedian that "Liberates the lunatic side to our personalities - brilliantly!” The middle acts will include up and coming stars of comedy, Roanna Bond and Chris Norton-Walker. Roanna Bond made her stand-up debut with Funny Women at the Leicester Comedy Festival in February 2010. With her unique brand of observational wit and surreal wordsmithery, she is already attracting widespread attention. With her quirky brand of offbeat humour and genial, ad-hoc style, she is winning audiences over from Truro to Rochdale. Chris has only been performing comedy regularly for the past 6 months but has racked up over 100 gigs in that time. He pokes fun at comedians and audiences alike, while mocking assumptions and challenging notions. He uses himself, and his life experiences, as a mirror to ridicule stand up comedy and to deconstruct established comedy motifs. He regularly performs all across the country taking his brand of one-liners, hilarious anecdotes and a commanding stage persona with him. Funny First Mondays describe Chris as a comedian who is "cementing his reputation as one of the best up and coming acts around". Definitely a name to look out for in the future! Vince Atta will be performing the closing act on the evening. It's fair to say that everything he touches turns to gold. His high-octane performances, stunning delivery & flawless array of impressions leave you short of breath. He was the winner of the much-coveted City Life Comedian Of The Year in 2006, an award which has seen previous recipients include Peter Kay, Caroline Aherne, Chris Addison, Jason Manford and Seymour Mace. Unity say "He sparkles - he's energetic, animated with a gift for characterisations", while Steve Bennett, Chortle reviews describes him as "an unstoppable force, forging a brilliant rapport with the audience, like an intravenous shot of adrenaline!" With a broad, wonderful spectrum of material ranging from students, Spanish horses in a kitchen, psychotic London ex-girlfriends, pointless racial pride and the advantages of an alcoholic mother, Atta brings an inspiring touch of pathos which demonstrates an unerring ability to turn experience into bullet proof comedy. Tickets for the event, which are purchased in advance, cost £10 and are available from the Brewery Tap bar and restaurant or the National Brewery Centre. With seating at tables in cabaret-style, the audience can enjoy the comedy and have the option of eating a meal during the performances. The organisers are recommending that customers book early to avoid disappointment, as tickets are limited. Doors open at 8pm and there’s plenty of free, onsite parking available. Doors close at 11pm.
