Moira, nr.Swadlincote, South Derbyshire, UK – 21st June 2010 – As part of a programme to introduce a range of exciting new activities, Conkers, in The National Forest, has introduced an innovative, interactive exhibit to its Discovery Centre. Visitors can now experience all four seasons in one day –or, just a few minutes, to be more precise.

This new attraction cleverly uses four high-definition projectors to display a themed scene onto a specially-coated floor that visitors can walk across. A fitted motion detector allows the scene to respond as it senses people moving over it. The virtual experience consists of a floor which currently displays a leaf-strewn autumnal scene, which invites visitors to kick leaves around as they walk across the surface. As an accompaniment, the attraction also offers visitors the chance to experience the changing seasons via sounds and images projected onto an adjacent wall. This continues the fun, environmental and educational focus of the entire Conkers site. Chris Sturdy, general manager at Conkers said: “We are really pleased to be able to offer this new attraction here and it’s proving to be a lot of fun for our visitors, regardless of their age.” “I’ve spotted quite a few adults regressing back to their childhood, kicking leaves around and I even saw one person sliding across the floor in their socks! “The addition of the four season-themed wall and interactive floor really enhance the Conkers experience and ties in nicely to all of our other activities and exhibits.” David Dutton, director with C2R Ltd, the company that installed the new attraction, added: “At 33 square metres this interactive floor is probably one of the biggest of its kind in the country.” “We’re working with Chris and the team at Conkers to further enhance the interactive floor by adding several other activities, which will be rotated throughout the day. This will probably include a football theme which will allow visitors to kick virtual footballs.” The newly opened exhibit is located in the Discovery Centre and is available at no extra cost to visitors. Set in the heart of The National Forest, Conkers offers a multitude of outdoor activities, including: numerous nature trails; an adventure playground; an assault course; an art gallery; the Conkachoo train and an amphitheatre- which hosts many events throughout the course of the year. Conkers also boasts a recently-opened barefoot walk. This 250 metre trail takes visitors on a tour of the area’s 200-year industrial heritage. It allows them to walk barefoot across timber, bark, coal, pebbles, wood and clay with each surface representing part of the site’s history, from its coal mining days in the 19th Century, to the creation of The National Forest in recent years.
