In September 2023, the ground under the E6 motorway in Stenungsund in western Sweden. The motorway collapsed in several locations within a stretch of 700 metres and the area affected by the landslide was about 14 hectares. The E6 motorway between Gothenburg and Oslo is one of the main traffic and transport routes between Sweden and Norway. The repair of the motorway was expected to take up to year-end of 2024.
The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) appointed the construction company Peab AB to repair the collapsed area of the motorway. Peab selected Foamit Group as the supplier as Peab was already familiar with both foam glass and its good features as a building material, and Foamit Group as a reliable supplier with capacity to deliver large quantities of foam glass on short notice.
The size of the foam glass delivery for the project was considerable totaling 40 000 m3. This represents approximately 6% of the Foamit Group's budgeted turnover. The sizeable fast-track project was carried out in Nordic cooperation between Foamit Group's production plants in Sweden (Hasopor AB) and Norway (Glasopor AS) in April and May.
Motorway re-opens six months earlier than expected
To restore smooth flow of traffic in the area rapid reconstruction of the collapsed motorway for through traffic was essential. The Swedish Transport Agency's first forecast for completion of the repair work was early autumn, or latest year-end of 2024. The motorway will be opened for traffic up to 6 months earlier than first forecast.
“As the repair work has progressed very well and the foundations outside the landslide area are about to be completed, we have revised our timetable and the E6 motorway can be opened for through traffic already during the second week of July. The fact that the E6 motorway will be ready for through traffic already this summer will be a great relief for the bypass roads, which have been heavily congested since the landslide”, says Daniel Svensson, Project Manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.
“It's great that our joint Nordic production capacity can respond very quickly to such major projects, and that we were able to contribute to the excellent progress of the project. Foam glass is a genuine circular economy product with versatile features that enabled savings in work phases, contributing to the opening of the E6 motorway ahead of schedule. The excellent co-operation and planning with our customer Peab contributed to the smooth progress of the project also from a logistical viewpoint”, says Daniel Ellison, Managing Director of Hasopor AB, part of the Foamit Group.
“At very short notice and with a tight timetable, Hasopor and Glasopor together managed to deliver big volumes of material to our project. We are very grateful for this as it helped us keep our schedule for an earlier opening of the E6. Foam glass is a light and flexible material to work with which also saves time and money”, says Johan Eriksson, Site Manager at Peab.
"On behalf of Foamit Group, we are proud of the company’s contribution to this project that is significant for the society and that was completed in a short timeframe thanks to excellent cooperation between the authorities, the main contractor and Foamit. Foamit Group's order and tender book for major public projects continues to be strong”, says Peter Vapaamies, CEO of Partnera.
