Fennia Prize 22 competition rewards companies and organisations that use design as a strategic resource in their business operations. The Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) will award its own prize of EUR 5,000 for praiseworthy use of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).

Fennia Prize 22 competition rewards companies and organisations that use design as a strategic resource in their business operations. This manifests itself in many different ways in products, services or business concepts. Service design is already well known to many companies, but the customer experience can also be improved using design methods. Strategic design pursues growth and internationalisation in an increasingly competitive market.

- By international comparison, intellectual property rights are handled well in Finland. Our companies protect their rights actively, both in Finland and in their export markets. Unfortunately, small and medium-sized companies are not as aware of IPR as large enterprises, but there are positive exceptions. Start-ups that invest in business growth and scalable business concepts are often exemplary in protecting their IPR, says Jorma Hanski, Director at the PRH.

PRH involved in the Fennia Prize competition for the fifth time

The Fennia Prize 22 design competition is organised by Design Forum Finland and Fennia in collaboration with the Finnish Patent and Registration Office and Elo. The prizes total EUR 35,000, a sum donated by Fennia and Elo. The Finnish Patent and Registration Office will award its own prize of EUR 5,000 for praiseworthy use of Intellectual Property Rights.

- We are pleased that an increasing number of people understand design as a strategic part of business and a field of expertise. People no longer talk only about the design of objects or devices, but also about the design of spaces, systems, and service processes, states Anna Lauttamus-Kauppila, Director at the PRH and a member of the jury in the competition.

- Companies that rely on design should protect their intellectual property rights more actively. That is why the PRH is glad to take part in spreading the message of IPR to companies, Lauttamus-Kauppila continues.

Competition entries will be accepted from 16 August to 15 October 2021. The winners and honourable mentions of the Fennia Prize 22 competition will be selected by a jury of design and business experts. Fennia Prize 22 is part of Design Forum Finland Awards, and the winners will be showcased at the DFF Awards exhibition in spring 2022.
