4th International EcoSummit Reassembles in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (October 4, 2012) – More than 1,500 scientists, economists and corporate leaders from 75 countries devoted their time and talents to documenting proactive ecological solutions in these changing and challenging global times.

Top Headlines from Day Four of EcoSummit 2012: Thursday, October 4, 2012

  1. Ecology and economy are more closely intertwined than most people think. Lester Brown, founder of the Earth Policy Institute, explained how climate change could create economic calamity unless immediate action is taken.
  1. The recent draught highlighted global food security issues that could impact billions worldwide. Ohio State University Professor Rattan Lal showcased solutions in the soil that can help combat global climate change.
  1. The President of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, visited EcoSummit 2012 to discuss the international dialogue on renewable energy and climate change.
  1. Elinor Ostrom was a global thought leader in the study of collective action and community-based governance of natural resources. While this Nobel Prize winner passed away in June, her thought leadership continues. A panel of Ostrom’s former students and colleagues shared insights about her research agenda and its legacy on the study of environmental systems.

  1. We all want a better quality of life for our children. Meeting those goals while preserving our ecology are often at odds. Robert Costanza is Distinguished University Professor of Sustainability and Director of the Institute for Sustainable Solutions (ISS) at Portland State University and Editor in Chief for “Solutions” magazine. He discusses these roadblocks and how to overcome them to create a more sustainable and successful future.
