MOODY•NOLAN EARNS NATIONAL PALLADIO AWARD FOR LERNER THEATRE
National design firm Moody•Nolan won a Palladio Award for its restoration of Indiana’s Historic Lerner Theatre, an Elkhart landmark originally constructed in 1924. The Lerner Theatre is part of the community’s revival and renewed investment in the arts, commerce and life. Elkhart was struggling to thrive until the city came together to generate new revenue streams of which the theatre was a central piece.
The Palladio Awards, the only national architectural competition honoring projects for excellence in traditional design, recognized Moody•Nolan and Associate Architect Cripe Design with the Sympathetic Addition Award for their addition and façade restoration of the theater.
“To be recognized for our ability to enhance the beauty of the historic Lerner Theatre encapsulates the essence of our mission to provide responsive architecture,” said Curtis Moody, president and CEO of Moody•Nolan. “The prestige of this historic restoration award solidifies the diversity and the talents of our architects despite our national reputation as a firm specializing in education, sports/recreation, collegiate and healthcare design.”
The Sympathetic Addition Award recognizes the sensitivity and compatibility of a new addition to a historic structure. Moody•Nolan took its inspiration directly from the historic Lerner Theatre’s Beaux Arts/Neo Classical architecture in terms of massing, scale and detail motifs. It created a seamless expression between the historic theater and the new ballroom, lobby expansion and office addition.
“By creating this new addition, we’ve provided ancillary supportive space that expands the Lerner Theatre and makes it more viable for continued new contemporary functions and theatre-related programs,” said Jim Kienle, Director of Moody•Nolan’s Historic Preservation Studio. “The enlarged theater fills out an important corner in Elkhart and makes a significant urban design statement that contributes to the revitalization of the downtown.”
The 12th annual Palladio Awards competition recognized 11 architectural firms for outstanding work in traditional design for commercial, institutional, public and residential projects. The Palladio Awards program is coproduced by Traditional Building and Period Homes magazines, and it is named in honor of Andrea Palladio, the Renaissance architect who created modern architecture for his time while drawing on past models for inspiration.
